What Companies Say vs. What They Actually Mean

Hiring has an official language. Offers live and die in the gap between that language and operating reality.

Hiring has an official language. It is polite, optimistic, and load‑bearing. Beneath it sits the operating reality, which is where offers are actually won and lost. Candidates make decisions on the official language and then live inside the reality. The gap between the two is where searches quietly fail.

So we keep a ledger. Not to be cynical. To be accurate.

01
“We’re ready to hire.”
Translation
The process may still take eight months.
02
“The hours are flexible.”
Translation
You can choose which ten hours you work.
03
“The role is what you make of it.”
Translation
Nobody has agreed on what this job is yet.
04
“We need someone who can hit the ground running.”
Translation
Onboarding is not on the roadmap.
05
“This is a confidential search.”
Translation
The person currently in the seat doesn’t know.
06
“Compensation is competitive.”
Translation
The band was set before the market moved.

Both sides run a dictionary. Candidates keep one too. “I’m open to the right opportunity” is doing a remarkable amount of work in the market right now.

That ledger is Volume Two.
